LEFT OR RIGHT?
Final Video
Jonathan Smith, Luke Stetler, Mitchell Anderson
Every single video that we watch contains carefully chosen camera angles that convey the mood or the story of the scene. For example, a low camera angle can make the subject seem more powerful, while a high camera angle can make them seem less important or small. In a film, each camera angle is carefully selected and filmed. Our project was to study the left and right rule. This series of shots conveys a choice that the main character has to make. Forward or backward, left or right, should he save his friend or capture the enemy. Some directors use these camera angles to show this choice, and often dialogue isn’t needed. Our video shows this concept in an almost exaggerated way. Should the boyfriend eat at McDonalds with his best friend or should he follow his girlfriend to a nicer, yet more expensive, restaurant? Should he go left or right?

Self Portrait Project
In this project, we expressed ourselves through a photo that includes us. Meant to show who we are, and show the progression of time, I chose to use a photo that shows me at work. I am most happy at where I work, and that photo was taken of me while I was doing what I love. However, I photoshopped it into a sketchbook to represent my story still being written. It shows my work life, which is also a major part of who I am and who I will be in the future.

Reflection
Why is it important to understand the intentions behind an artwork? Especially a self portrait?
When studying art, the artists surroundings and perspectives on the world filter their way into the image. From world wars to fashion trends there are a number of factors that can change what the intentions are in a piece of art. For example, during a political crisis, that is when we see some of the best rhetorical pieces of art. These are not only intended to entertain the viewer but probably persuade them to take a certain stance in the political spectrum. In self portraits, the intent is to reveal what the artist is all about. These portraits are intended to be a sneak peek into the mind of the artist. The viewer must also take into considerations events and factors on the artists life when studying their self portraits. If they are surrounded by positivity, a self portrait most likely will contain bright colors, whereas if they are going through a negative time in their life these portraits could have a dark tone. Frida Kahlo is a great example, some of her self portraits are happy and some look happy yet reveal sadness in the background.
What problem solving skills are employed in making visual reflections of self?
I found during this project that creating a self portrait that is meant to show some personal growth can be one of the most challenging tasks that you undertake. You must think about yourself on many different levels, and reveal to yourself who you are. How is this overcoming a problem? Sometimes you don't want to do that. Sometimes you don't want to think about what makes you... you and that can shut down your creative process. I found that I needed to overcome that struggle during this project and think long and hard about what makes me... me. It is very easy for me to look around me and see what factors in my life contribute to who I am, like my friends and my job. Yet it is really difficult for me to look inside and find what has made me the person that I am. In making a visual reflection of yourself, I found that the problem solving I needed to do with not technically with Photoshop, not with taking a photo... but finding a way to convey who I am to others.

Advanced Digital Art Teacher Creature Project
For this major photoshop project, we were given two weeks to transform images into something completely different using the tools of Photoshop. I chose to create a surreal image that looks realistic, yet is completely impossible. Below are the drafts to show the progression of the image, the final product and a proof sheet.
Reflection:
This project was fairly easy for me to complete. I would say that the hardest part was coming up with a concept for the image. I knew that I wanted to use a surreal concept and make something that seemed well… out of this world. Even after choosing this idea, I still struggled with finding ways to improve the basic concept. From minor tweaks to major changes the project evolved well throughout the process.
Throughout this project, I determined that I really enjoy surreal photos, and that might be one of my styles as an artist. I have always enjoyed post apocalyptic story ideas, such as the Hunger Games or Divergent. With this project, I really wanted to develop my photoshop style into one that can make something somewhat realistic, but is known to never be true. There is something about surreal art that I enjoy, and I really wanted to try and recreate that.
For me, the underlying structures of this art were my job and my passion for trains. This is a major structure in my life and has shaped who I am. Also, I have always thought about trains as a global structure that we need to support our economies. So.. my art reflected this as a train circling the globe. It’s a steam locomotive, which represents the past and the space travel which represents the future.

Photoshop Warm Up
With the goal of dusting off our brains when it comes to photoshopping, the upperclassmen were encouraged to pick a photoshop tutorial and try to follow it as closely as possible. I chose to go a different track and focused on refining the skills that I have already been learning a bit about, like the stamp tool and lighting. You can see below the before and after photos.

Animas River Documentary |
Animas, the name itself means soul in Spanish. That meaning holds true as it is the soul and lifeline of our community. Piercing the heart of Southwest Colorado and Northern New Mexico. It provides drinking water, irrigation water and adventure for thousands of people. However its history is full of mining at its headwaters. This history is responsible for the development of our area, yet it has had detrimental effects on the Animas River. For our Create Your Own Art Project I decided to shed some light on this issue. After the Gold King Mine Spill of 2015, there is a lot to discuss.
Below is a small trailer for the film, and the final product should be finished by the end of the year.
